Background of the Study
Economic self-sufficiency is a crucial goal for communities seeking sustainable development and resilience against external economic shocks. In Ibaji Local Government Area, Kogi State, vocational education has been identified as a strategic instrument for achieving economic self-sufficiency by providing individuals with the skills necessary to become self-reliant entrepreneurs and skilled workers. Vocational programs in this region offer training in areas such as mechanics, tailoring, and agro-processing, which are directly linked to local economic activities (Okoro, 2023; Eze, 2024). By emphasizing hands-on learning and practical skill development, vocational education fosters an entrepreneurial spirit and enables graduates to create income-generating opportunities. This approach not only reduces reliance on external employment but also contributes to community development through the establishment of small and medium enterprises. Over the past few years, government and non-governmental organizations have collaborated to improve vocational training facilities and curricula, aiming to better align educational outcomes with the specific needs of the local economy. Despite these efforts, challenges remain in ensuring that vocational education fully translates into economic self-sufficiency. Factors such as limited access to capital, inadequate market information, and the absence of effective mentorship programs hinder the potential of vocational education to drive sustainable economic growth (Nwosu, 2023). Moreover, socio-cultural attitudes towards vocational training, which are often perceived as inferior to formal academic education, further diminish its appeal among potential beneficiaries. This study seeks to explore the multifaceted role of vocational education in promoting economic self-sufficiency in Ibaji by examining the interplay between educational practices, community needs, and market dynamics. By providing a comprehensive analysis of current vocational education programs and identifying critical gaps, the research aims to offer actionable recommendations that can enhance the effectiveness of these programs and ultimately contribute to the economic resilience of the community (Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of vocational education to foster economic self-sufficiency in Ibaji Local Government Area, the anticipated outcomes remain elusive. Many vocational training programs suffer from inadequate funding, outdated equipment, and a curriculum that does not fully address the local market demands. As a result, graduates often struggle to establish sustainable businesses or secure employment that enables them to achieve economic independence (Ogbu, 2023). Additionally, the lack of access to startup capital and insufficient mentorship opportunities further undermine the effectiveness of vocational education as a tool for economic self-sufficiency. Social stigma and a preference for formal academic education also contribute to low enrollment and limited community support for vocational programs (Eze, 2024). These challenges are compounded by external economic pressures, including market volatility and limited infrastructural development, which collectively hinder the ability of vocational education to produce self-reliant graduates. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors that prevent vocational education from fully achieving its potential in promoting economic self-sufficiency in Ibaji. By examining the alignment between training programs and local economic opportunities, as well as exploring the socio-economic barriers that impede entrepreneurial success, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the problem. The findings are expected to inform the development of targeted interventions that address these challenges, ultimately enabling vocational education to serve as a robust platform for achieving economic self-sufficiency in the region (Okoro, 2023).
